The Investigation of the Safety and Various Values of the Toys


Abstract
Author inquired into the safety and various values of toys which were on the marketing to evaluate the merit of the toys and play therapy in the field of clinical pediatric nursing. The questionnaires which were carried on 502 mothers of primary school children in Seoul disclosed following results.
1) 56.8% of the children had experienced accidents due to the toys, and 10 of them often.
2) The main causes of the accidents were sharp edges of the toys in 37.6%, breakage of the toys 28.3% and fall down while the toys rolled on 23.2%, in the order of frequency.
3) 55.8% of the mothers answered the toys were durable, and 43.3% fragile. The toys made of glass or china were most fragile, and the next were plastic or steel-made. The most fragile kinds of toys were guns, cars and trains.
4) More than half of the mothers put great educational value on the toys. And they accepted that toys affected especially the intellectual developments of the growing children, and such opinions were most obvious among the group of mother of higher school career.
5) 67% of the mothers had used toys when their children were sick *to ease them and relieve their pain.
6) Extroversive children were more interested in the toys than introspective one. The interest in a toy lasted for several days or one week in most of the children, and two third of the children showed greatest interest in the toys at their age of 3-6 years.
7) The higher is the school career of the mother, the higher is the tendency to select the toys for her child according the sex and age of the child and the educational values of the toys.
Most of the mothers did not limit the play activities of their children.
